About

I play games and think out loud about it.

I have a strange love of the ridiculously obscure, the time-wasting, and the so-bad-it's-still-actually-pretty-bad.

Wikipedia is an MMORPG.

And of course, Encyclopedia Dramatica’s take on it.

It’s cruft-clearing day here at Metaphor For Life, and essays which have previously been yanked for revision or in draft mode have been aired out.

(1) ¶ Dragonica Online

Dragonica Online is an extraordinarily charming game.

Great cinematics with excellent character design. I was impressed with how an option was provided to that at the beginning.

The adorableness will absolutely kill you. I think that’s a large part of why I’m choosing to play “kids’ MMOs” these days (how I hate that term!), I’m tired of playing MMOs that feel like nerds have been sweating all over me, Age of Conan being the first to come to mind.

Then, a tutorial that didn’t make me want to kill myself. Did I mention that the animation in this is fantastic, with a sense of humor I find lacking in, well almost every other MMO? The graphics are really impressive.

The journal! This MMO isn’t going to get in the way of you finding out as much as you can about the world.

The interface is incredibly intuitive. And for an Asian MMO (I don’t think so) the translations are excellent. Detachable chat window!

Sure it’s just another action RPG character advancement crawl, but they put thought and effort into the design. What a revolutionary idea!

Let it be known from this day forth that I did solo a party boss at my level without any skill points invested in anything!

And I forgot to put my helmet on.

(0) ¶ Tips on icing your head

  1. Do you understand, I mean really understand why you’re playing this?
    • Is it an open-ended goal that’s probably going to kill hours of your life? Is it to explore?
  2. Make a daily goal. Then leave.
  3. You know what’s awesome about warbiking? It’s a place and a time and you get up and walk away and leave.
  4. A day or two of rest. Before your mind stars jittering into overdrive. And you’re not on a schedule.
  5. Get out of the guild. Mentally, at least.
  6. In fact, you play games for fun, remember?
      “You play to beat them.”
“Yes!  But you play them for fun, remember?”
“But what if you want to write a guide?”
“Ah, you’re mixing up your gaming life with your creative life.”
      “Can it really be separated?”
“I think some are a little more consumerist than others.”
      “Any tips?”
“No. Just play what you want to play when you want to play it.”
  7. So it turns out creative fulfillment vastly improves your chances of not letting a bad game drain .
